Brain dead, and CSA

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Okay, I'm in not too bad of shape with this assignment, I guess, unless I've woefully misinterpreted what it's supposed to do. The instructions were... terse. But my brain is seriously shutting down, so I'm going to quit working on it for tonight and come back in the morning.

CSA this week included: daikon, red radishes, turnips, a few little carrots, garlic, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, turnip greens (in addition to those on the turnips), dandelion greens, and purple beans. [Still around from previous weeks: cherry tomatoes, radishes, daikon, turnips, acorn squash, butternut squash, beets.] Turnip puree again, probably; cook some of the red radishes for SO; plain steamed beans; lettuce salad. I might turn the other greens into a tart (don't have that recipe online yet). I also have a recipe for shrimp with cherry tomatoes and feta (also not online) and have a pound of frozen shrimp, so maybe that (using last week's tomatoes, which are now about ripe).

Other than that... Taught classes. Got prep done for Monday for both classes. Had a meeting. Dealt with work email. Dictated about 800 words each on two different fics; one for a fest, the other DD. Played some with Juno.

Now waiting for SO to get home. He'd indicated he was going to try to get home early tonight, but that didn't happen; he decided he really needed to work out since he hadn't all week. Okay, fair enough, and I worked on the assignment meantime. But if he doesn't get back soon, we probably can't have our Friday night date since restaurants around here close pretty dang early even on weekends. So we'll see. There are some leftovers if we end up not doing anything tonight.

Happy birthday!

Where did the day go?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Did not get nearly as much done, work-wise, as I hoped. More household/personal stuff.

Done dids: )

[info]3fan_holidays will be running once again! This is the small ficlet fest I mod, now in its fifth year. Wow. It's a low-commitment, very friendly little exchange; participants only have to write as few as 100 words (up to 2000 max), in one of three fandoms: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or Pirates of the Caribbean. You don't have to be familiar with more than one, and you can request fic in a fandom you're not comfortable writing. Go here for the info/signup post, and spread the word!

Finally finished and posted the next installment of HotM. I need to edit/submit a fest fic, finish another (which is becoming rather longer than I thought initially), and start on December's DD. Phew. Then there'll be Yuletide fic to write, too, and 3fan. Clearly my sanity is, hm, marginal when it comes to all this.

Dear Yuletide writer...

Signed up for Yuletide! At the time of my sign-up, no one else had either requested or offered any of the four fandoms I picked. *holding thumbs* They are:

Anne Perry - Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series - Charlotte Pitt
Jacqueline Lichtenberg and Jean Lorrah - Sime/Gen series - any characters
Norah Lofts - The Maude Reed Tale - any characters
Rumer Godden - Thursday's Children - Doone Penny, Ruth Sherrin

I'm actually posting this before I complete the sign-up, so I can put a link to it there. (And cross-posting just 'cause I always do, and besides, maybe some of my f-list will be interested.)

Dear Yuletide writer, I've been a very good girl this year... )

Because clearly I love lists

Also, yay! My gift in the [info]fall_fantasia exchange was posted yesterday! It's called "Unveiled," and is Draco/Sirius with a side of Severus/Harry. Postwar and PG, and I enjoyed it very much.

The day so far

More lists )

Also, [info]fall_fantasia has started posting; this is a small exchange, in which I am one of the participants. Since there are only ten people (one fic posted daily), I'm trying to make a real effort to read all the fics (unless there's something that squicks me, natch). The two posted so far have been most enjoyable.

Okay, did 3 loads of laundry, large amounts of cooking, and talked with my mom for an hour. Have also completed one of the LIS assignments and turned that in; still have 4 chapters to read for that class, also 3 articles for the other plus an assignment and online discussion, by Tuesday. Did not get any grading done, so will have to work on that tomorrow as well (this batch needs to be graded by Wednesday; there's another lot of papers coming in tomorrow for the other class, too).

On the plus side, I got an extra hour of sleep this morning? Now if I could only get that every morning...

And we finished watching The Magdalene Sisters tonight. Very good film (based on a true story, apparently), albeit quite depressing. Netflix rocks; I love being able to get less-common films so easily.

Halloween, CSA, etc.

Our biggest turn-out yet: 84 trick-or-treaters this year, between 6 pm and 8 pm when we blew out the pumpkins, turned out the lights, and had our dinner. SO carved Johnny Cash on one of the pumpkins (using a stencil) and was disappointed that no one recognized him, although several people commented on the high carving quality.

Now though I need to work on two different LIS assignments and do some grading. Whee. Granted I did no work whatsoever yesterday for either teaching or classes being taken, so... yeah. Must catch up. Just don't feel like it much.

Barely here

Lots and lots of assorted errands and chores this afternoon/tonight, and then we had our usual (though not invariable) Friday night marital date, going to a Mexican (well, Tex-Mex) place that was new for us and was quite good. Now back to paying bills, then will crash.

Tomorrow: grocery shopping, pumpkin carving, neighborhood event, trick-or-treat duty. Also in there need to grade and/or work on LIS assignments, also work on job app stuff.

Okay, so the good news is that I passed my comprehensive exams! YAY!

But in totally unrelated news... Cut for sheer annoyance factor )

Leaving, on a jet plane

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Just finished booking flights & car for the memorial service for my grandmother; it's going to be in a couple of weeks, on the 14th of November, therefore do-able for both me and SO. We'll be staying (along with my dad) in my grandparents' house, which has not yet been sold. Probably the last time I'll ever see it; I suspect it will be sold now that Grandma is gone, rather than remaining with one of the kids. (Kids. Heh. These would be my dad and uncles and aunts, the youngest of whom is 11 years older than I. But that is how that generation has always been referred to within the family, even by me.) I know my sis can't make it to this service (having just started a new job, among other things); don't know which of the other grandkids will be there, but I both want to go (as does SO) and feel that as the oldest grandchild, I really should go.

So between now and then, I have lots and lots of work to do for both classes being taught and classes being taken, and also start applying for jobs. All folks asked to be references have said yes, so I need to do final tweaks to resume and send that to them all. Reread job descriptions and decide who to use as references for each (and send those people copies of the ads), write job letters, and apply. Whew. Busy busy busy. Today specifically, much grading to do, start work on two different LIS assignments, and need also to wrap/mail gift for cousin's new baby.

Going home now. I got the sad news about my grandmother this morning, taught back-to-back, had a lunch meeting, and since then have been doing grade entry and prep, so that if I end up traveling such that I can't get to Friday's classes (or Monday's classes) things are set up so that I can call on a colleague to step in, if need be. Have long to-do list re: teaching stuff still, but the most vital stuff is ready for not just Friday, but Monday, in case.

Also - if anyone on my flist is in Southern California and can help rescue some cats, please read this post ASAP.

Sad news

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I heard from my dad this morning that my grandmother died last night. Not unexpected; she'd been in reasonably good physical health but she fell and broke her hip this past weekend, and never woke up after surgery. He commented that it was a blessing, since with her memory problems, she just didn't have the quality of life she once had (we were never certain if she really grasped that my grandfather was dead - she was aware of his absence though, and that saddened and upset her). I wouldn't perhaps use the term "blessing" but certainly agree with the sentiment.

Don't know anything yet regarding services, but hopefully will hear something later today. SO wants to go too, if at all possible, since he was not able to go for my grandfather's last January.

*takes deep breath* Still have to teach and do the usual stuff, of course. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, to be occupied. I do regret that I didn't get Grandma's birthday card sent on time; I was so distracted by my comps (which were on the day of her birthday) that I didn't get the card mailed till this Monday. But there's always something to regret, isn't there?

*is tired*

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
No particular reason to feel as wiped out as I do, but I'm just exhausted. Walked Juno, finished all the reading I needed to do, washed etc. 3 loads laundry, went to class. Have lined up another person to be a job reference and also acquired several official copies of my transcript, so just need to ask my current head tomorrow to be a reference also and I'm set (well, then I have to write job letters, but...). Did not do grading (surprise, surprise) but hope to be able to slam through it tomorrow before class.

Oh, and I did a little dictation en route to class tonight, and I think I'm just about done drafting this fic. So maybe tomorrow a bit of work on HotM, the next installment of which is barely begun; or else work on next fest fic. It's nice to have a brain able to think of something besides exams, for a change.

Happy birthday!

*grumble*

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've gotten quite a lot done today, actually; now completely prepped for both classes Wed. and Fri., and have caught up on most of the grading also - still need to grade revised papers, plus several grad reviews, and as of tomorrow will have another batch of quizzes also. But not too bad.

Have reading for tomorrow's LIS class of course as well, plus tomorrow is laundry day. Should be manageable.

What's irking me ATM though is a fic, in which the characters are not being cooperative about getting it on, and they need to. *sulks* Maybe if I have another piece of chocolate before I head home, that will be a sufficient muse-bribe?

Work of all sorts

I've updated my library resume, created a new gmail account for professional contacts (since the current student and professional email addresses will go bye-bye once I'm no longer a student and no longer working at my present job, that seems best), and emailed the third of three profs at library school to ask if zie will serve as a reference; still need to ask my current dept. head but will do that in person tomorrow. Also need to obtain official transcript (several copies) although obviously it will not reflect completion until early 2010; that I can do Tuesday when I'm on campus as long as I get there early enough for a change. Right now there are actually two possible local-ish academic library jobs I can apply for, although given that I really can't start till June, I'm not sanguine that they'll be interested once they find that out. Also one public librarian position in the city, but it's only half time and again I can't start for months, more likely to be a problem at a public library than an academic one.

Got confused this morning and briefly thought it was time-change weekend, but no, it's next Sunday. Bummer. I could've used the extra hour. Have a bunch of grading to do, also a lot of reading for classes (both teaching and taking), plus some cooking and talk with my maternal unit. I was hoping to have time to do a bit of gardening work but I don't think that will happen (perhaps later this week if the weather is cooperative - I have bulbs that need to get into the ground!). Maybe SO and I will go check out doghouses for Juno, though. He's still working on our front windows but thinks he will actually be able to prime at least one of them today - the end may really finally be in sight!
